Reconceptualizing Down Syndrome
Reflection
I believe that Down Syndrome and the way we look at is has changed immensely from when the article was first published. It should change and grow because we are learning and growing as a culture. I believe this has to do with many things in life and that if a person is given a label and people know about this they are instantly put in that certain category and it is extremely difficult to get out of it. It has to do with the whole knapsack but kind of the opposite affect with many people thinking of it as a disability and that it represents who you are as a person and many people don't want to be known as the label instead as an individual.
I believe in this a lot because my mom is a type 1 diabetic and doesn't normally share with her colleagues at work that she is because she is afraid they would treat her differently and if she ever did have a reaction people would be unsure what to do. I think people need to learn to not be afraid of what is different but embrace the change. They need to know that everyone is different even if you can't see it.
I agree with you, many people think that a disability represents a person and therefore people with disabilities become labeled. No one wants to be labeled as the “Down syndrome” kid or the “special needs” child. We deserve to be treated as individuals because that is what we are. People are afraid of telling other people their secrets or problems like your mother because they are afraid of being judged. Humans need to embrace change and stop being so judgmental. Special needs people are regular people just like us, they are more alike than different.
ReplyDeleteI think its nice how you shared something so personal. Great post this week.
ReplyDeleteI agree I like how you shared something personal relating to this topic. People shouldn't worry about what others think whether they have down syndrome or not. They shouldn't be treated any differently. A person with down syndrome can accomplish anything they want and in their own ways as we learned from this article which I thought was very inspirational! Great post!

ReplyDeleteit is really hard keeping something so personal in because your afraid people will you look you different. but as long as shes well and healthy thats all that matters!:)
